Due to unforeseen circumstances I am without an oven for 30 days…that’s right, 30 DAYS OVEN-LESS! For those of you that know me personally, you can attest to the ridiculously complicated meals that I often find myself jumping into without realizing how much time and effort they will take. But I LOVE cooking so I do not generally mind the time it takes…that being said, I have NEVER lived without an oven.
Growing up, my Mom had to work a lot. So she would whip up a lasagna or a shepherd’s pie or any other sort of casserole a day in advance and then wrap the dish in tin foil with directions written with a sharpie on top. She hated being away so often, but like any good mother, she wanted us to eat well. This was how she made sure we did. I would follow the directions to the letter and dinner would be on the table by the time she got home.
You could say that my Mom started me on my cooking journey. She did so with an OVEN!
For several reasons, I find myself without an oven for 30 days. This is something of a nightmare for me. I am familiar with the oven, the inner-workings, the timings and the potential pitfalls.
- I have never owned, nor used a toaster oven and I am crap at using my slow cooker.
- I am terrible at planning a meal so far in advance that it requires not only defrosting a meal ahead of time, but also to START IN THE MORNING!?
These gadgets are foreign to me and now those, along with my trusty plug in griddle (which I had previously never used) are the gadgets I must master in my kitchen.
Does all of this sound challenging to you? If you have ever been single (or a man in your 20’s) you may not find this daunting, but as someone who steams, bakes, roasts, grills, etc. I am at a real disadvantage for the next 30 days. The task at hand is this:
- Survive for 30 days with no oven, BBQ, cheese grater, mandolin, mixer or any containers in which you can steam anything.
- Cook delicious and nutritious meals without these kitchen staples and blog about it.
- Remain sane.
This may sound easy to some. This may sound trite to those of you that are without ovens…although if you are without an oven you are probably without the internet or at least you are without the need to search for online recipes (unless you share my current predicament). And still to others, this may sound like what it is to others; a nightmare. A nightmare I am part of the way through I will admit. I am on day 10 currently and have only this recipe so far to share with you. There were many other things created of course but only this which survived my gruelling taste testing compliments.
So enjoy. Enjoy the next 2/3 of my personal version of roughing it and together we will laugh and probably cry at what comes out of it.
